Ambivalence About Motherhood is Criminal! [12 Feb 2010|06:13am]

tealighttrees
Really? Seriously? This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard in my life. Prepare to be enraged.

This case from Iowa is a spine-tingling example of the ways that feticide laws, ostensibly created to protect pregnant women and punish late-term abortion, can go awry. Police accused Christine Taylor, an Iowa mother of two, of trying to kill her fetus when she fell down the stairs. According to Ms. Taylor, she was crying and hyperventilating after a distressing conversation with her estranged huband, and fell down a flight of stairs. Although paramedics said she was fine, she went to the emergency room out of concern for her fetus. While there, she admitted to hospital personnel that she had not wanted to be pregnant and had considered adoption and abortion rather than raising a third child as a single mother.

Read this slowly: she was arrested and jailed for being ambivalent about her pregnancy.

Boycott Marriott. [15 Aug 2009|03:06pm]

Doubtless many of you have already read about the Marriott Hotel in Connecticut that's been engaged in victim blaming this week.

Cut for rape triggersCollapse )

Click here and let Marriott know that you won't be giving them any of your hard-earned dollars until they issue a public apology and make clear what steps they will be taking to prevent anything like this from happening in the future.

Hey all!

Members from this community have shown an interest before in this, so I thought I'd drop a line once more:

I'm an editor for Below the Belt, a multi-faceted genderblog designed to provide a space for informed, critical commentary about gender, sex, sexuality, and the many other aspects of gender facing people around the world.  We're looking for new writers of various kinds, and I urge you to check out the site and see if you think it would be a good fit.

Cheers!

Plastic Speculums [20 Mar 2009|11:27am]

hopita
I just read a post over at howsexworks called "Just say no… to plastic speculums." The gist seems to be that doctors use plastic speculums because they're cheap, but that they can break and injure women, so we should refuse to allow them to be used.

South Africa National Party Seeks to "Rehabilitate Gays" [16 Feb 2009|07:15pm]

queerunity
The revived National Party in South Africa will allow gay and lesbian members to serve, but says that the government will help to "rehabilitate" them. They are also strongly against the constitution allowing same-sex marriages. It is a shame that the NP is thinking of itself above science which shows that homosexuality is natural and cannot be altered, attempts to "rehabilitate gays" fail.

Женское движение FEMEN предупреждает: вторая волна секс-туризма не за горами! [15 Feb 2009|11:28pm]

femen

high school level gender studies curricula/resources [06 Feb 2009|12:29pm]

kshea333
Hi all,

I'm working with a new alternative high school in New Orleans with creating a gender studies curriculum for them. I have a lot of readings and resources from my college courses, but none that would be appropriate for high school aged kids, especially ones with a relatively low literacy level. Does anyone know of any good resources for high-school level gender/women's studies readings/resources?

Bolivia to Vote on New Consitution With Abortion Rights, and Protections for Sexual Minorities [22 Jan 2009|02:24pm]

queerunity
Bolivia will hold a nationwide referendum this Sunday for its constituents to decide whether to approve or reject a new version of the country's constitution that would provide for abortion rights, religious liberties, and protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens.

Take action to urge the President and Vice-President to vocally support the referendum publicly.

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but my friend Jenna (a.k.a. trashcan_chica) needs some help:

"does anyone know of any queer zines about living in rural areas or going to rural areas?

any help/pointing in the right direction would be amazing. i went through the whole Queer Zine Archive and couldn't really find anything.

thanks!
jenna b

Her (AIM) away message also says: "is looking for zines about/by members of radical queer ANTI-URBAN communities, so if you know of any..."

So please comment if you can help at all; thanks. :]
